    Papua Program, KOROWAI TRIBE

    7 Days 6 Night

    Overview

Irian Jaya (Papua) is the second largest island in the world, attracting lovers of exoticism and adventure. This amazing island is rich in a variety of attractions, including Lake Sentani, Apayo Island, Doyo Lama Village (famous for its unique woodwork and rock paintings), Baliem Valley (homes of the Dani, Lani and Yali tribes), Asmat tribes famous for their artistic wood crafts, and the Karowai tribes build their tree houses, providing travelers with a unique experience.

    Day 1
    ARRIVAL JAYAPURA – DEKAI
    • Arrive on a morning flight to Jayapura, followed by an afternoon flight to Dekai, a small town in the interior of Papua. The flight takes about 40 minutes. Dekai is a newly developing city after the introduction of self-government policies in Papua. Roads, government offices, etc. began to be built here. After arriving in Dekai, check into a small hotel. Dekai is the home of the Manimo tribe, a fairly modern tribe.
    Day 2
    DEKAI – LOKBON – MABU (Z, O, U)
    • Transfer by motorbike to the small traditional port in the village of Lopon, approximately 1 hour drive along a dirt road. From Lopon we will travel south along the Braza River, one of the largest rivers flowing south and connecting with another river in the Asmat region. Along the way, you will see dense forest, peaceful surroundings, and sometimes encounter other boats passing by. Along the way we can stop at small villages belonging to the Tsitak Mitak tribe. We will sail to a middle village called Mabu. This journey by boat will take 8-9 hours.
    Day 3
    MABU – SENDIK (Z, O, U)
    • Breakfast at a local house, then walk with our local Papuan porter to Sendik village - a small village with 2 tree houses (for now, subject to change in the future). We will walk along a muddy and partly wet tropical path from Mabou to Sendik for approximately 5 hours. This path is the main access to the outside world for the local Korowai tribe. The trail is covered by a thick canopy of rainforest, which the locals use as a hunting ground and semi-nomadic farming area.
    Day 4
    LOCAL ACTIVITY IN SENDIK (W,L,U)
    • Today we will be participating in the local daily activities of Korowai, a great time to understand the daily habits of the locals. The activity will involve fishing with local residents. We will come to the nearby river with them. Korowai use the root, which is mashed and immersed in water. It is poisonous to fish and other aquatic creatures. Sometimes they block two sections of a small river and dry it up. Fish and other aquatic creatures are becoming the big prize of teamwork today. We will be covered in mud, catching fish or frogs with our bare hands. Children and elderly people come to the river to help. After such an excellent job, the locals will prepare the catch of the day: fish, frogs or worms, cooked over an open fire. Together with a ball of sago, these catches are eaten with great satisfaction. Korowai cooks without any spices, if they have salt then it is the only ingredient that adds flavor to the food.
    Day 5
    SENDIK - MABU (Z, O, U)
    • We follow the same path returning from Sendik to Mabu. Arrival in Mabu in the afternoon.
    Day 6
    MABU - LOKBON - DEKAI (Z, O)
    • Walk to the river bank, then sail to Lokbon, a 9-hour boat journey. We will sail up the Sirez and Braza rivers. During the dry season we may need more time as we have to be careful of logs falling into the river and sometimes we will have to be helped by the boat
